Blog writing motivation tip: Write for yourself!

“Always write for your audience, not for yourself.”

I’m sure you’ve heard this before. Hey, I’ve even recommended it myself when it comes to writing engaging copy that gets noticed.

However, blogging is a little bit different.

Yes, you want people to read it, like it, share it, comment on it, etc.

The thing is, what captures readers’ attention first and foremost is a writer that is clearly passionate about the subject matter. That is why, in order to capture an audience for your blog, you need to write for yourself first.

One of the most common mistakes new bloggers make is that they copy someone else’s style, so very quickly blogging becomes a chore for them, and their motivation starts to dwindle.

Your blog is your personal space, and it reflects your identity and your individual voice. You might not capture thousands of fans in a day, in a month, or even in a year, but if your blog post is helping even one person, then its creation has been worth your time.

Just stick to your niche and write anything that interests you within that niche.

For me personally, it’s a mixture of marketing, communications, writing/blogging, small business and customer engagement. However, when my motivation is lacking in these areas, I throw in one from my other passions of health and fitness.

It really doesn’t matter if the topic has been covered by other bloggers before.

One misconception about blogging is that there is no point in writing about topics that have been written about hundreds of times before. But that’s not true.

The fact is that every day a new internet user is born, and your blog might be among the first sites that that new user will find, or it could be that your personal take on this particular topic is the one that really strikes a chord with the reader.

And, once you have them engaged with your infectious passion and enthusiasm, you could be the one to teach them about whatever it is they want to learn, and from that you start positioning yourself as an authority on that topic.

So, in short: Stick to your niche, stick to your passions and write for yourself.
